Wireless Pacemakers Now a Reality

Pacemakers are devices used to control a heart’s beating. These devices transmit electrical impulses that make contact with the heart. Many people who have pacemakers need them in order to maintain a normal heart rate. Pacemakers have historically been implanted by threading wires through veins to get to the chamber of the heart. However, type of technology has been improved. A pacemaker free of wires has been created by designers in Cambridge, England and in California, USA. The wireless system consists of a tiny box that is implanted within close proximity to the heart. When needed, this box will emit pulses to help get the heart regulated once again. This wire free pacemaker is being tested in trials throughout Europe. Soon testing of the wireless system will commence in the United States. This revolutionary system is known as WiCS, an acronym for the Wireless Cardiac Stimulation System. If testing goes successfully, this can make pacemaker insertion and usage much simpler.
