The Menopause

Menopause can be simply defined as the permanent cessation of monthly periods, as part of our biological process. Though it is not a medical illness, treatment should be sorted when its symptoms are severe.

WHEN

It occurs between the age of 45 to 55, depending on individual women and their geographical location. In rare cases loss of ovarian functions happens before the age of 40, which is called premature menopause.

WHY

The ovaries start making less progesterone and estrogen, which are the key hormones for regular menstruation. It is a natural ageing process.

WHAT HAPPENS

1. Irregular periods
2. Decreased fertility
3. Vaginal dryness
4. Hot flashes
5. Sleep disturbances
6. Mood swings
7. Increased abdominal fat
8. Thinning hair
9. Loss of breast fullness

All these occur during the menopause transition period called as the perimenopause.

WHAT TO DO

1. Can opt for menopausal hormone therapy.
2. Choose herbal remedies using phytoestrogen.
3. Inculcating physical activity specially weight bearing, in your daily routine.
4. Take a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D.
5. Watch your weight.
6. Quit smoking.
7. Approach individual counseling or support groups.

Post menopause (the rest of the women’s life) can be made more comfortable, healthy and confident along with the help of medical help and simple lifestyle changes.
