Signs of Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s is a terrifying and devastating disease that people struggle to except upon diagnosis. The fight to find a cure or preventative measures rages on but in the meantime you can equip yourself with the know how needed to spot the signs of Alzheimer’s.
There are TEN KEY things you can look out for and if you string together any of these symptoms you should seek medical attention. Being precautious is completely acceptable and is far better than ignoring the signs.
The first of these signs is:
1. MEMORY LOSS – When we speak about memory loss it can affect short-term and long-term and everyone can be affected differently. Most commonly people seem to forget relatives, even their husbands or wives for short or long periods of time. This can be extremely frightening but is a clear indicator that something is seriously wrong. You might just forget simple things that you needed to do that day or you might find yourself requesting the same information again and again.
2. CHANGES IN MOOD/PERSONALITY – This is difficult one as without the other symptoms you might assume you or the person you think is affected is just having a bad time/feeling/stressed for other reasons. The feelings to really look out for are those of anxiousness, depression, anxiety or fearfulness.
3. DECREASED/POOR JUDGEMENT – Decision-making may become more difficult or erratic. Judgement may lapse in areas such as personal hygiene and cleanliness for example.
4. CONFUSION – This falls in to a lot of the other symptoms mentioned but people often find themselves confused about who they are with, where they live, where they are, what they were doing. It can become very easy to lose track of the time and the date.
5. TROUBLE WITH VISUAL IMAGES – Difficulty reading and judging distance or colour can also be a symptom of Alzheimer’s, this is a tricky one as again it could be put down to just losing eyesight with age. Trying to line up these symptoms is the important part of an early diagnosis.
6. UNABLE TO PROBLEM SOLVE – this can be with complicated or very simple things. Things you might not have had trouble with before may become confusing that used to be second nature. Difficulty concentrating is the main thing to look out.
7. PROBLEMS WITH WORDS – Writing or speaking could become difficult, most likely you might be confused when it comes to writing things in order, forgetting how to spell or simply repeating yourself in conversation.
