Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Exposure to asbestos leads to mesothelioma, a deadly type of cancer. This is a rare form of cancer which affects people working in close contact of asbestos. Mesothelioma has three types; when a person gets a chest infection, it is called pleural mesothelioma, when it is an abdominal infection it is peritoneal mesothelioma and when the heart and surrounding area gets infected it is called pericardial mesothelioma. People who work in ship building or the construction industry have the highest risk of getting this disease. Workers inhale asbestos fibres and these fibres get lodged in different parts of the body. People who get infected do not show any symptoms immediately, as it takes about 15 to 40 years for the symptoms to manifest. Even families of workers are at a risk of getting this disease as workers carry asbestos fibres on their clothes and their family members who handle their clothes too end up getting infected. A person who suffers from mesothelioma can claim asbestos compensation from their employer as the employer is supposed to provide a safe working environment to their employees. The outlook for mesothelioma patients is bleak, since this disease gets detected at a later stage, making it difficult to cure.
